What collateral changes
A secured loan is backed by a pledged asset. If you do not repay according to the agreement, that asset may be at risk. An unsecured loan does not pledge a specific asset, but repayment is still a legal obligation.
Weigh costs and consequences together
Compare actual fees and repayment terms. Do not assume that pledging an asset automatically makes a loan less expensive or guarantees approval. Consider whether you could manage the consequences of losing access to that asset.
Ask clear questions
- Which asset secures the loan?
- What does the agreement say happens after missed payments?
- What fees, term and total repayment apply?
- Are there other options that avoid pledging that asset?
Choose the context that fits
Home and vehicle financing commonly involve collateral. Personal and business loan structures vary. Review the specific agreement rather than relying only on the product name.
