Begin with the full obligation
Borrowing brings money forward and commits future income to repayment. Start with the expense, the amount you need and a monthly payment you can plan for. Leave room for other obligations and unexpected costs.
Put the terms side by side
Compare the amount financed, APR, term, required payments, fees and total repayment. Keep the amount and term consistent where possible. A smaller payment alone does not show whether a loan costs less.
Look beyond the headline
For a mortgage, principal and interest are only part of housing costs. Review taxes, insurance and any mortgage insurance, plus closing costs. For any loan, ask about prepayment penalties, optional add-ons and what happens if a payment is late.
Make space for your decision
Read the disclosures and ask questions before signing. Understand what secures the loan and how the payment could change. An estimate on this website is a learning tool, not an offer.
